My explosively creative and brill friend Nomy Lamm performing “Wall of Fire” at the 2008 Sins Invalid performance.

Nomy Lamm does a lot in addition to working and performing with Sins Invalid: She writes enduring, burning narratives of truth and beauty (ref. feminism 101 required reading: her essay “It’s a Big Fat Revolution,” as well as her brand-spanking new luminously insightful master’s thesis), is a vocal coach, runs the “Dear Nomy” advice column over at make/shift magazine, and performs with a variety of other intensely magical types under the moniker Nomy Lamm and the Whole Wide World.

Sins Invalid is a performance project that incubates and celebrates artists with disabilities, centralizing artists of color and queer and gender-variant artists as communities who have been historically marginalized. Our performance work explores the themes of sexuality, embodiment and the disabled body. Conceived and led by disabled people of color, we develop and present cutting-edge work where normative paradigms of “normal” and “sexy” are challenged, offering instead a vision of beauty and sexuality inclusive of all individuals and communities.

Ceremony: A Personal Narrative of My Abortion Experience →

Becoming pregnant and going through an uprootion has reminded me of the power and magic of my own body. I still grieve, for healing is not an instant, gratuitous process. And equally powerful, has been this raging passion to self-determine how my body and spirit heals, how I tell my story, and how I continue to use my power and magic towards a world more like our dreams.
